I live within walking distance—Kaercher's creek park and recreation area was 'closed' in 2014, it still remains open, but without regular maintenance. The state owns the land/lake, but it use to be maintained by Berks County. After financial and maintenance disputes between the state and county the actual park area was closed. The boat ramp and parking area remain open; dusk - 10 pm. The boat ramp is for smaller boats only; internal combustion motors are prohibited.
Since 2014, the 3 fishing docks have been removed from the water, the pavilion areas no longer have picnic tables, there is no playground equipment, and the lodge that use to be rented out has been boarded shut, along with the public restrooms being permanently closed. There is also substantial overgrown grass/weeds especially in the spring and summer times.
The county stopped stocking the lake in 2014. It use to be stocked with Tiger Muskellunge each year. There was no stocking between 2014-2016, but in 2017 there was a small stocking of 25 fingerling Muskellunge. Channel Catfish were last stocked in 2012. This is not really a bass lake; in fact the last bass stocking occurred in 2008, most are under or around 12 inch size or smaller. Pickerel, Crappie, and various Bluegill species were also stocked, but none recently.
Overall, the park is still peaceful and a beautiful natural environment even though it is not maintained any longer. It remains a top lake to fish for muskie if interested. Although not personally knowledgable, I believe it would be a good place to go bird spotting as well.
