If you live paycheck to paycheck, M & T bank is not a good choice.
My experience with this bank and specifically this branch was very lacking. I opened my account in August to manage my car payments. The manager, Steve, opened both a savings and checking account. He told me that I would recieve both a debit a credit card upon opening the account. The debit card would be recieved in 5-7 business days and the credit card would arrive at my address in around 10 business days.
After about two weeks, neither had arrived. I made contact with Steve to tell him that both the debit or credit card had not arrived. He said he would check into it and see that both would be resent. Two weeks after that, neither had arrived. Went in to talk and had them resent. Again, two weeks went by and neither had arrived at my address. Mind you, this whole time I would receive letters from M & T Bank telling me the advantages of using my card and also bank statements, so my address was correct in the system. It took another visit with Steve and a total of two and a half months to receive my debit card. As of writing this review, almost five months after opening my account and being told a credit card would be sent, I have not received the credit card. I'm not sure why this happened as other notices from the bank would arrive just fine.
Overdraft fees are excessive. As someone who has a tight budget, mistakes may happen. Money was short one month and my account was short for a bill. I am grateful that the bank covered the bill, though the overdraft fees are extremely high. Billion dollar banks do not care much for customers who cannot sustain high amounts in their account. The bank mailed a notice to me about an overdraft 3 business days after it occured. By the time it was delivered by the USPS toy address, it was already past the 5 day period of when ANOTHER fee of $38 would be applied (totalling nearly $80).
The teller of the branch asked if I had checked my online banking. My online account was not set up properly when my account was opened by Steve, so I never had access. She then told me I should have checked at an ATM. For people who do not have much money, they may limit their usage and not have used an ATM or attemped a transaction within 5 days, making this advice useless. This bank will not work with it's customers, even if it's the first occurence of an overdraft when many other banks would.
Overall, there are many other banks or credit unions in York that seem to care more about their customers. More sane fees and wiggle room and will be more responsive to issues like cards not being recieved. My experience was negative, though it was most likely at corporates fault than the employees at this specific branch.
